Heartland Sulphur LP (HSLP) is an Alberta Limited Partnership devoted to providing sulphur forming and logistics services to the sulphur producers and allowing them to reach world markets. HSLP is a joint venture between Lion Sulphur Inc. and Inter-Chem Canada Limited, two companies who have been working in the sulphur industry for over 25 years.  LEARN MORE

Sulphur supply is increasing in Alberta and there is a need for additional sulphur handling facilities to serve this growing market.  As refining capacity increases, producers will be required to move more sulphur to maintain refinery operations. In addition, there are approximately 10 million tonnes of sulphur on blocks in the Oilsands that will require future reclamation. Heartland Sulphur Terminal will provide the forming and liquid loading facilities required for Alberta producers to move the increasing sulphur supply to various world markets.

Overseas, sulphur is generally marketed on a dry bulk basis. In order to move product to the port and participate in overseas markets, Canadian sulphur producers must have access to sulphur forming facilities.  The US sulphur market, which imports a significant amount of Canadian sulphur, operates on a liquid sulphur basis because of the logistics infrastructure available. So Canadian sulphur producers must have access to a liquid rail car loading facilities to access the US sulphur market.  The Heartland Sulphur Terminal is designed to consistently and efficiently move Alberta’s sulphur to these various world markets. Historically, Canada is one of the largest exporters of sulphur in the world.  This facility will bring a proximate terminal capable of handling Alberta’s northerly migrating sulphur production.

The proposed Heartland plant location was selected based on several parameters:

1. Proximity to transportation networks and emergency services

The site is strategically located adjacent to CN Rail, which provides shipping access to Vancouver ports. Its location along Highway 15 just NE of Ft. Saskatchewan allows for efficient logistics for producers in the Oil Sands, Edmonton, and surrounding areas. The local fire station is only 4.7 km away and is trained in all manner of industrial emergency response by virtue of the multiple industrial facilities already operating in the area.

2. Environmental conditions

The site is located in a growing industrial area surrounded by existing and proposed industrial development. The development will be located on what is currently agricultural land and will avoid major disruptions to sensitive environmental ecosystems and water features.

3. Employee base and services

The Industrial Heartland area has numerous professional services available for the facility as well as a large and skilled employee base to draw from.

4. Proximity to supply

The site is proximate to sulphur production points both in the Edmonton area and the northern Oilsands sulphur supply.

5. Distance from residents

The site is approximately 13 km from Fort Saskatchewan, 6.6 km from Josephburg and 6.9 km from Bruderheim. There are about five residences within 1.6 km of the site.

Safety and Compliance

Our partners prioritize safety and regulatory compliance above all else when handling sulphur.  The excellent track record of Heartland Sulphur's partner companies is evident in the performance of their two sulphur transload operations in Alberta. The partner companies have been the recipients of numerous railroad safe handing awards, most recently Canadian National Railway's Safe Handing Award, Canadian Pacific Railway Co's Safe Shipper Award and most recently CSX Transportation's Chemical Safety Excellence Award, one of only 3 companies to earn the award 10 years in a row.
